In terms of its size, Nebraska is the country's 16th-largest state, covering an area of 77,358 square miles (50 million acres). In its entirety, 76,824 square miles (99 percent) is made up of land, while the remaining 524 square miles is covered by water. Of the nearly 800,000 acres of public lands in Nebraska, approximately two percent is open to hunting. Most hunting in the state takes place on private lands.
