Newport is the glittering jewel of Rhode Island, an impressive oceanfront enclave of coastal mansions that include opulent Gilded Age palaces built by 19th-century industrialists like the Vanderbilts. Public lands in Rhode Island are relatively sparse, combining a number of state parks and beaches as well as about 60,000 acres of wildlife-management areas for hunting and fishing. Lands of America research shows that 90 percent of land in the Ocean State is privately owned.
