The Black Butte Ranch is located approximately 22 miles south of Great Falls, Montana. With an average annual rainfall of 16 to 18 inches, the Black Butte Ranch provides excellent summer pasture for a large number of cow calf pairs. The ranch encompasses 9,200 acres of which 8,000 are deeded, 560 acres are BLM and 640 acres are state lease.
Elevations range from 4,600 feet near the Smith River where the topograghy is mostly rolling hills to 6,310 feet at the top of Black Butte. Black Butte is well known for it's extensive populations of elk and mule deer, while other wildlife species include black bear, mountain lion, Hungarian partridge, and mountain grouse.
The Black Butte Ranch borders the Lewis and Clark National Forest for over 2 miles providing excellent access to thousands of acres for recreational purposes.
