State fair officials consider new land sale proposal

Amid growing public outcry, Alaska State Fair officials say they are seriously considering proposals to preserve farming on the fair's last piece of agricultural land. And one farmer says he's prepared to make an offer. August 24, 2010 But don't dig into that fertile glacial soil yet. The fair is also still moving ahead on the only official plans for the former Hamilton Dairy property at this point: its sale to Northern Industrial Training for a $24 million instructional campus. NIT representatives want to build a complex of dorms, classrooms and power sources such as wind turbines and a cogeneration plant across Springer Loop from the fairgrounds. The school already operates a commercial truck-driving program at the fair.
