Pima could buy disputed acreage

Pima County officials have started moving toward buying the saguaro-rich Painted Hills property in the Tucson Mountains foothills, with an appraisal that concludes the site is worth a fraction of what a pension fund paid for it in 2006. The new county appraisal pegs the 286.5-acre property's value at $3.6 million. That figure is based on sharply declining land and home prices in the area since the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System bought the Painted Hills land in March 2006 for $27 million.
