SCOTTSDALE - State Land Commissioner Mark Winkleman said he plans to meet with Scottsdale officials soon to discuss a planned auction of 1,700 acres of state trust land the city wants for its McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross was furious in December when the Arizona State Land Department pushed ahead to ready the 1,700-plus acres for a future sale.
The city thought it had at least five years to try to buy the land for the preserve.
The meeting comes in the wake of Gov. Janet Napolitano's pledge in her State of the State speech Monday to halt sales of certain state trust lands classified for conservation without first getting local approvals.
More than 200 acres of the 1,700-acre tract are in that category.
Winkleman said the 200 acres, mostly washes, might be removed from the application to sell the 1,700 acres.
