Colusa ag land donated to WCC

March 04, 2008
Colusa Heritage Partners and Woodland Community College announced that they have executed a letter of understanding that provides for the donation of five acres of land to WCC.

The land would be used by WCC for a future agricultural instruction satellite center.

The five-acre site will be offered for donation upon receipt of land use approvals by the Colusa County Board of Supervisors said Jim Resney, senior vice president of CHP.

According to the letter, signed by WCC President Angela Fairchilds, it was intended as a conceptual understanding between WCC and CHP.

The letter indicates that the college and the developers have agreed to collaborate on a number of activities.

The activities include development of curriculum targeting agricultural science, agri-business and welding, to develop new partnerships with agriculture-related business, and to assist in providing opportunities for student internships as part of the practical job-preparation component of WCC's curriculum.

CHP and WCC would co-sponsor one or more of the WCC Programs including the possible development of an "experimental farm" in association with WCC and/or other education institution(s) and/or agricultural -oriented private company or companies for the purpose of establishment of an agronomic research facility or facilities within the land sphere of CHP's project.

Fairchilds noted in a recent interview however that the Colusa County facility allotted for the county by the passage of Measure J is an entirely separate project from the agricultural satellite facility proposed for County Line Road.

"Measure J allocates $3.4 million for a facility in Colusa County and we are making that a priority in our planning," said Fairchilds, adding that no Measure J funds will be used for the County Line Project.

While the college is looking for three to five acres of land that it is still hoping will be donated, Fairchilds said she is hopeful the community would be instrumental in helping to identify potential donors.

If the land cannot be donated, Fairchilds said the project would move forward with looking for land for sale. "We hope to be up and running within three years or sooner," she added.

Fairchilds commented that WCC has focused on a central location in the county, and is considering the possibility of co-locating with the Colusa County Office of Education.

"We need the site to be centrally located. There was some rumor that we were considering County Line as a site, but that is not true," she said.

Again, Fairchilds stressed that, per the letter of understanding, WCC is discussing the possibility of collaborating on an agricultural education facility in conjunction with Colusa Heritage Partners, but that it is in the future. "However, I do have plans to offer agriculture-related classes in the Colusa area within the next year," she said.
