Conservation easements preserve 5000 acres from non ag use

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service California state office and the California Department of Conservation partnered with several trusts to preserve a record 14 significant farms and ranches in Northern and Central California in 2011. October 25, 2011 Approximately $20 million in conservation easements were provided through NRCS’ Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program, the Department of Conservation and other partners. The easements, which are in 11 California counties — including El Dorado and Yolo — will help preserve 5,000 acres and limit the conversion of farm and ranch land to non-agricultural uses. “The partnership between DOC’s California Farmland Conservancy Program and the USDA’s Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program has resulted in the protection of thousands of acres of the nation’s best agricultural land from development and is a model of state-federal cooperation,” said Derek Chernow, DOC acting director, in a statement. “Good farmland is a finite resource, and there’s less and less of it every year. We have to continue to work to preserve as much high-quality farmland as possible.”
