Study of Droste property warns of building trails

A biological study of Pitkin County’s new Droste open space property and the contiguous 2,500-acre public lands area in which it lies recommends banning dogs, limiting trail construction and closing it to the public for several months annually, in an effort to protect wildlife and habitat. October 21, 2011 Pitkin County released the study Wednesday. It was written by Western Ecological Resource, Inc., of Boulder, and Wildlife Specialties, LLC, of Lyons. The thorough study — summarized in a 220-page report — will be used by the county’s open space department as it routes a trail system and writes a management plan for the area.
