Stew Leonard's Land For Sale

Back in 1969, Stew Leonard’s had a humble beginning as a small dairy store with only seven employees. Since then, Stew Leonard's has grown to become one of the most renowned grocery store chains in the U.S. It looks like more plans for expansion won't happen in Orange for owner, Stew Leonard Jr. who has been struggling for the past 13 years to build a 145,000 square-foot dairy store, 40,000 square foot garden center, and a 50,000 square foot retail space. The dairy mogul announced on Wednesday that his Marsh Hill Road land just off I-95 is on the market.
Construction has been sidestepped for more than a decade due to a group of local residents called Save Our Neighborhood. The organization claims the project would create too much traffic, noise, crime and unreasonable environmental harm. Leonard bought the 41-acre parcel in 1996 for 2.2 million dollars and is now asking 14.5 million dollars. “Why not see what happens? We want to leave all our options open,” Leonard said. “Were not looking at opening anything in Connecticut.” With stores in Norwalk, Newington and Danbury, CT and Yonkers, NY the family is, however, looking to open other stores in surrounding states where the real estate The land in Orange is currently being used as a cornfield.
