In a surprising announcement, made even more dramatic by the history behind it, a beautiful estate located next to the renowned Mauna Kea Beach Resort is being sold - for the first time ever.

The site is named Wai'ula'ula after a stream that flows through the property. MacArthur & Company / Sotheby's International Realty is currently offering the 9.76-acre estate on LuxuryRealEstate.com for $35 million - a kingly price for an estate fit for royalty.

"This is quite possibly the most remarkable real estate I've ever had the privilege to work with," said Dodie MacArthur, owner, real estate broker and luxury specialist for MacArthur & Company / Sotheby's International Realty. "It's dripping with palpable history, and I am so pleased that we can help someone add a new chapter to that history by being the first person to purchase this estate."

While the next chapter in this estate's story is still being written, its noble history is chiseled into its distinctive features. In 1963 Lurline Matson Roth dreamed up this magnificent estate, and she feverishly determined to bring it to life as quickly as possible.

Roth inherited the legendary Matson Navigation Company from her father, giving her ample ability to create her unique vision. Already famous for expanding and improving the famous Filoli estate in San Francisco, Roth was no stranger to grand real estate projects. She bought the Filoli estate in 1937 and donated it to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1975, showing her desire to preserve history.

In 1963, the recently widowed Roth set her sights on Laurence Rockefeller's famous Mauna Kea Beach Resort and decided to build an enchanting estate that would complement and enhance the resort.

She hired architect Joe Esherick to bring her vision to life. Esherick designed four luxurious suites and a caretaker cottage, inspired by the beautiful landscape and coastline. He built them with tall, spacious ceilings, concrete pillars and Koa paneling. The completed estate included 4,755 square feet of living space in the main houses, 1,110 square feet in the caretaker cottage, a beautiful, white-sand beach just 10 steps away from the main bedroom and a close proximity to the resort's golf range and other amenities.

It only took five months to build this estate, an amazingly short amount of time considering the difficulty of importing large building materials to the island back then. After 44 years it still has the power to inspire awe in people who see it.

"Whoever buys this home will inherit not only the beauty and splendor of the estate, but the wonderful history surrounding it, as well," MacArthur said.

MacArthur & Company / Sotheby's International Realty is a member of the Board of Regents with LuxuryRealEstate.com, a prestigious title only awarded to the top real estate brokers in the world. Potential buyers and developers can find pictures of the property for sale and contact information at www.LuxuryRealEstate.com and they can contact MacArthur and her associates at (808) 885-8885.
