Farmers doing the buying as Indiana land values push up

Some industry representatives agree with a group of agricultural economists at Purdue University -- farmland values continue to climb at a time when the nation is trying to emerge from a recession. "Even while some residential and commercial real estate values have been falling, that has not been the case for farm real estate. Instead, we've seen some high prices for farmland in recent months, even exceeding $10,000 an acre in some extreme cases," said Mike Boehlje, an ag economist who helped author a paper titled "Farmland Values: Current and Future Prospects."
