NY land conservation group buys 800 plus acres in scenic upstate mountain range for $8.8M

A land conservation group has purchased nearly 900 acres in the Hudson Valley's scenic Shawangunk (SHAWN'-guhnk) Mountains. September 15, 2011 The New York City-based Open Space Institute announced Wednesday that it completed the purchase of 874 acres, all but 17 of them in the Ulster County town of New Paltz. The organization purchased the land from the Smiley family, which has owned the Mohonk Mountain House resort in New Paltz for more than 140 years.
