City landfill acquires contaminated farmland

Officials with the Iowa City Landfill have acquired almost 17 acres of farmland adjacent to the landfill’s northeast corner to track a groundwater contamination that breached the disposal area’s property line. January 09, 2012 Dave Elias, Iowa City wastewater superintendent, said the property was requisitioned last week to continue monitoring — and eventually intercept — various organic and metal contaminants found in the groundwater system nearest the oldest cell in the landfill, which dates back to the early 1970s.
