Green Ridge forest expands by 400 acres

The state Board of Public Works has approved the purchase of almost 400 acres for nearly $1 million to add acreage to Green Ridge State Forest. The land is particularly important because it borders Town Creek. October 20, 2011 “The protection of the old growth forest and the boundary along Town Creek, which ultimately is part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed,” were among the reasons the property acquisition was important, said John Braskey, of Program Open Space. Work on the acquisition has been under way for about six months, he said. “We don’t approach anyone who is an unwilling seller,” Braskey said, and the seller makes the first contact with the state. The purchase also fits in with the management plan for the forest, he said.
