Harford County will sponsor an agricultural land preservation seminar that will include discussions on rural land use, preservation options, proposed protected areas, land trusts, tax benefits and property values on Wednesday in Street.
Among the presenters are David Thompson, chairman of the county's Agricultural Preservation Advisory Board, William Amoss, administrator of the county's preservation program as well as a land planner, attorney versed in estate planning and a certified public accountant.
"A lot of our work is connected to estate planning," Amoss said. "We talk about the total picture, about what each farmer wants to pass on to the next generation."
Since the IRS has made available many options to bolster preservation efforts, Amoss has asked a tax attorney and accountant to participate in the seminar.
"We are trying to sell the whole package -- preservation, estate planning, tax credits and child lots," Amoss said. "Farmers can actually keep and use their land, get a tax credit and still allow a child to build on it."
The seminar is to be held 8 a.m. to noon at Highland Presbyterian Church, 701 Highland Road. Registration is requested.
