US grants $485K to preserve 277 rural acres near western Md. town of LaVale

The federal Transportation Department awarded more than $485,000 Thursday to help protect 277 forested acres along a scenic stretch of U.S. 40 near the western Maryland town of LaVale. August 18, 2011 The funds, along with about $12,000 from Allegany county, will buy a conservation easement on the property owned by Arthur Scarpelli, state and local officials said. The easement will permanently protect the land from development as part of a management plan for the National Road, the nation's first federally funded interstate highway, running largely along U.S. 40 from Baltimore to Vandalia, Ill.
