Three firms vie for farm land
Source: Wicked Local, by Susan Parkou Weinstein
February 25, 2008
Raynham - Three companies have requested applications from the town to farm Borden Colony this year.
They include Olson's Greenhouses on South Street East and Whitney Trucking in Newton.
The companies must agree to use all of the 140 acres of farmable land on the agriculturally protected site.
"They have no choice," Town Administrator Randall Buckner said.
Last year, the parcel was split among several groups, including Reed Brothers of North Dighton, which had an agreement with the town for more than a decade until it cut back on its business.
Last year, a new lease ended on a sour note after Apple D'Or Tree Inc. of Northborough dumped trash-laden compost at the site rather than reaping crops.
The bulk of the town-owned Borden Colony is farmland protected under a state Agricultural Preservation Restriction.
Any leasing agreement must stipulate the protected farmland be used "solely for the purpose of planting, growing and harvesting agricultural products."
Apple D'Or operates a large composting plant in Mattapan but was barred from composting at Borden Colony because the process is not considered farming and emits pungent odors.
Olson's and Reed Brothers had sublet small portions of the land from Apple D'Or Tree.
