The Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy is launching its work in Macomb County with an invitation to Macomb County residents to join in with their support.
The merger of the Macomb Land Conservancy with the Oakland Land Conservancy resulted in the name change to Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy and has increased the Conservancy's service area to encompass both headwaters and downstream areas of the Clinton, Belle, Huron, Flint, Rouge and Shiawassee Rivers. The Conservancy's work now has an impact on water flowing into two Great Lakes - Huron and Erie and three connecting waters; Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River and the Detroit River.
As an incentive to expand the capacity of Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy to better serve Macomb County, the Bluestem Fund has agreed to a 1-to-1 match of every gift from a Macomb County resident, up to $7,500, between now and Sept. 30.
"This means if residents make their gift or pledge before Sept. 30, a gift of $100 will actually bring $200 to Six Rivers," says Alice Tomboulian, co-donor to the Bluestem Fund and one of the founders of Oakland Land Conservancy.
"We want to spur action in Macomb County and to build the capacity of the Conservancy to serve its new Macomb constituents," says Paul Tomboulian, also with the Bluestem Fund.
"Macomb County has its own distinct identity, with beautiful farms, vibrant urban and village centers, along with some high quality natural resources especially along the Lake St. Clair and the rural river corridors," says Donna Folland, executive director of the Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy. "Besides having a large number of active and committed environmental groups, Macomb County has shown a strong commitment to land conservation and protection of water quality."

The new expanded area, which also includes parts of Lapeer and Genesee Counties, now extends to Lake St. Clair and takes in the six watersheds of the Huron, Clinton, Rouge, Shiawassee, Flint and Belle Rivers.
Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working with public and private landowners to conserve land for future generations in Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer and Genesee counties. It is currently protecting 969 acres and helping to care for another 220.
