Missouri Governor Matt Blunt is calling on the US Army Corps of Engineers to consider suspending the planned rise of the Missouri River next spring to prevent a negative impact on the state’s family farmers and on industry. Blunt has sent a letter to the Corps’ Colonel Steven Miles saying the river should not rise until the 40 or so levees damaged in this year’s flooding are repaired. Blunt says one million acres of productive Missouri farmland are at risk. He says adequate river flow is necessary to support navigation on the river which provides drinking water and electrical power to Missourians as well.
