Overland Park founded with 600 acres of farmland

William B. Strang Jr. founded Overland Park when he bought 600 acres of farmland in the area of 79th Street and the Military Highway, now Metcalf Avenue, and platted six subdivisions. It boasted large lots that most citizens could afford, not just the wealthy, as was the case for most prior suburban communities. August 02, 2011 In 1906, Strang started selling lots and held the first public auction of lots in September. This first community started in Johnson County in the 20th century was to be a modern city for comfortable living away from the "sordid smells and sounds of the city," as Strang's promotional brochures stated.
