HELENA - Montana now has an official wolf-hunting season, contingent on wolves being taken off the endangered species list by the federal government.
The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission voted to approve the season this morning.
The season's opening date will coincide with the big-game hunting season, but will be extended through Dec. 31. The big-game season ends Nov. 30.
The season will begin in districts with backcountry areas on Sept. 15, the same date as the opening of the big-game rifle season.
Hunters will be able to take wolves with firearms and bows.
The commission also approved a wolf-trapping season, but will not allow the animals to be trapped for the next two years.
