Library wants land sale proceeds

What to do with the other property at 31 Potter Hill Road, which was originally slated for new library building after the town made the purchase several years ago?
November 15, 2007 The Library Trustees have a plan for the property and have brought their idea forward to the Gilford selectmen. Trustee Chair Robert Kammeraad asked selectmen Wednesday to back a warrant article that would ask Gilford voters to sell the previously purchased property with the proceeds to go toward the library building project. When the first property was purchased, most of the funds — $110,000 — came from a capital reserve fund set up by the town. Another $40,000 was contributed by private donors to meet the selling price of $150,000. "Because of that we feel that land, originally purchased for a new library, still belongs to (the new library project)," explained Kammeraad. Should the warrant article be approved, Kammeraad said the funds would be put toward the ongoing project; not necessarily toward building costs, but for furnishings like tables, chairs, or even moving costs to bring the tables and chairs to the new building. The trustees also asked for $15,000 to be tacked on to the library budget for 2008 to help cover additional moving expenses. Reacting to request, Selectman Connie Grant informed the trustees that the board would not be receptive to the library continually coming back for additional funding on the project. Grant moved to send a letter to the budget committee not recommending the additional $15,000 in moving costs. That motion passed. "It's quite simple, the public will come in and ask why don't you have this or that. And the simple answer will be, we didn't have enough funding," explained Kammeraad to the board. As far as the land sale warrant article goes, the selectmen took the matter under advisement and gave no indication on when they might have a decision. Read the complete article from Citizen.com » |
