Former Hillsborough Montgomery mining site preserved under land deal

More than 350 acres of the former 3M quarry in the Sourland Mountains will be preserved under a recent deal between Somerset County and a Pennsylvania-based mining company. September 07, 2011 The company, Gibraltar Rock, announced Tuesday that it had sold the land to Somerset County in a transaction early last month. The $3.9 million deal marks the third time in about two years in which the county has bought a piece of the quarry, which straddles Hillsborough and Montgomery, for preservation under the state Green Acres program.
