FAIRFIELD TWP. -- The school board still has 62 acres of land for sale on Buckshutem Road, just 3.2 miles from the entrance of Millville's motorsports park.
Superintendent John Klug said on Thursday that while several offers have been made on the land since it was first put up for sale last October, the land still has not been sold.
"We've had interest from a couple of developers who, basically, with the credit crunch right now, have things on hold," he said. "So we expect to be advertising it again soon."
Klug said the land itself is unique, given the fact that it is located so close to the park, and has sewer connections available.
"It's an unusual piece," he said. "It's a valuable piece. It's 62 acres with no wetlands, and it has sewer access. You don't usually find a large piece of land like that."
The suggestion was made recently that the land would be the perfect place to build a hotel.
With Bridgeton and Millville both working on their own plans to bring hotels to the area, it would be a competitive market for a developer to enter into.
Klug pointed out that, given it's distance from the park, a four- or five-story hotel on the site would actually provide a perfect location for racing fans.
"It could be a valuable piece for a hotel and restaurant pad -- the whole works," he said. "If you put a hotel there, that's over four or five stories, you'd actually be able to see the race track."
The superintendent said the decision to sell the land was made for a number of reasons.
Among them was the fact that the raceway is coming to town. It is slated to open in June.
"It makes sense to sell it while (the raceway) is coming along," Klug said. "(Land) is something that's in demand."
The land was originally purchased in 1996 with the intention of building the new township school on it.
After careful consideration, however, it was decided the school should be built at its current location on Gouldtown-Woodruff Road.
"The land is listed right now as surplus land on our long-range facilities plan," Klug said previously. "We don't really have a use for it now. If we decide to expand our school, it would be expanded on the current site. There's plenty of room for expansion."
