My childhood experience in the Pine Barrens was nil: We'd drive through it on the way to the Shore, but my parents were not the camping type. For a kid, the beach and boardwalk were Oz; who wanted to spend a weekend in the woods anyway? You'd walk around smelly and bored silly and there were spiders crawling up your leg and clumps of grass or brush stuck to your hair.
