WOOLWICH — The local government has done "an outstanding job" in protecting more than 4,000 acres of farmland in the fast-developing township, a state official said last week.

Woolwich has received an "initial plan endorsement" from the state Planning Commission, making it the first township to win such recognition under the state's transfer development rights program, said Agriculture Secretary Charles Kuperus.
Under the program, farmers can sell building rights to their land directly to developers, who then get to build in higher-than-normal densities elsewhere in the town.
