Land rich family sells 874 acres for conservation

The family that owns Mohonk Mountain House has sold more than one-third of its land to a leading conservation group. The Open Space Institute announced Thursday that it has agreed to buy 874 acres of land owned by the Smiley family, which has operated the famed hotel for 142 years. Its company, Smiley Brothers Inc., will retain 1,350 acres, including the hotel and surrounding lands. "To us, this is almost an iconic purchase," said Kim Elliman, president and CEO of the Open Space Institute. "It's economically important, ecologically important and aesthetically important."
