NYC buys 1655 acres upstate to protect watershed

New York City's water supply commissioner says the city has purchased 1,655 acres of land and conservation easements in the Catskills to protect the city's upstate watershed. August 17, 2011 The $4.4 million in acquisitions is the latest in New York City's ongoing efforts to protect the upstate watershed and maintain the high quality of its drinking water. A total of 19 easements and parcels of land were acquired, ranging in size from five to 288 acres. The properties are in Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, and Ulster counties.
