State makes $5.8M L.I. land purchase

In an effort to protect Long Island drinking water, the state has purchased a substantial portion of privately owned property in the Central Pine Barrens. May 05, 2011 Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the $5.8 million acquisition of 99 acres of land in the hamlet of Middle Island in Suffolk County, coinciding with Earth Day April 22. According to the governor's office, the land required special protection under the New York State Environmental Conservation Law because it "overlays the purest drinking water aquifer on Long Island."
