County offers land to entice industry

After a public hearing that drew several comments, the McDowell County Commissioners voted unanimously Friday to offer a 125-acre site on Ashworth Road to a new $30 million industry that could create more than 100 new jobs. April 02, 2011 As required by state law, the commissioners held a public hearing at 5 p.m. Friday before agreeing to offer the incentive to this new industry. County Manager Chuck Abernathy, who is also the county’s economic development director, said Friday this new industry plans to invest $30 million in machinery, equipment and a building. The new business would create 113 new jobs that would pay a wage higher than the local average wage and also provide its employees with health insurance, said Abernathy.
