Land Loss Prevention Workshop

SUPPLY – Brunswick Community College, Brunswick Housing Opportunities and Proverbial Concepts will host Land Loss Prevention, a workshop designed to educate landowners on how to hold on to their family land and property, on March 29 from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Today, African Americans own less than one percent of all privately-owned rural land in the U.S. Without access to appropriate legal resources, educated options and information, landowners - regardless of race - face challenges to land retention.
The purpose of the workshop is to help landowners truly understand and maximize the value of retaining their land. The Workshop will include brief presentations on the causes of land loss, as well as options families may pursue to protect their land. Speakers will include James Jeuck, NC State Forest Extension Service; Diane Standaert, UNC Center for Civil Rights; Eddie Kirby, Land Loss Prevention Project; David Richardson, Legal Aid of North Carolina; Anita Earls, Southern Coalition for Social Justice. Topics include: defining "heirs’ property"; partition actions; Wills and their impact; patterns of land loss in North Carolina; and an introduction to innovative ways of managing and holding on to your land.
Registration is free and lunch will be provided. Please register by March 24, 2008 by emailing brunswickhousing@aol.com, or calling (910) 253-0699
