For the second time in recent months, the Seneca Nation of Indians has acquired a large swath of rural land that was once part of the tribe's aboriginal territory.
The Seneca Nation has acquired a 54-acre parcel along Route 446 in Cuba in Allegany County that included a 92,025-square-foot former Acme Electronics warehouse. The property is about 75 miles south of Buffalo.
Terms were not immediately disclosed but the property had a $3.2 million asking price.
The deal comes two months after the Seneca Nation acquired 50 acres of land along Taylor Hollow Road in the Town of Collins in southern Erie County that will be used for housing construction and other related properties.
Both the Collins and Cuba properties will remain on the tax rolls.
Seneca Nation President Maurice John Sr. said there are no immediate plans for the Cuba property, although he did not rule out using all or a portion of the land for some form of residential development.
"We continue to seek the return of land -- once part of our aboriginal territories -- to the nation's sovereign ownership and control," John said. "It is truly satisfying to see land returning to the nation."
The Acme Electronics warehouse and manufacturing center closed five years ago after it had been acquired by Tracewell Systems of Columbus.
John said the Seneca Nation, which is seeing a spike in its 7,000-plus tribal members, is constantly looking at land acquisition deals, especially in Allegany and Cattaraugus counties and Oil Spring territories.
"We are growing again," John said. "Our nation's membership is up. Our economy is booming. Senecas are moving back from all over the country. We want to make sure we have space for our people to live."
