Liberty Township buys land for fourth fire station

Less than two months after opening a new fire station, Liberty Township trustees have agreed to purchase four acres of land to build a fourth station that would serve the northeast quadrant of the township.
It is something trustees and Chief Paul Stumpf have been discussing for several years with land negotiations beginning about a year ago. Constructing a fourth station is part of the township’s adopted master plan.
Two property owners on Kyles Station Road west of its intersection with Cincinnati-Dayton Road, agreed to sell their 4.4 acres at a cost of $211,500. Another $10,200 has been set aside to pay for surveying, environmental studies, title search, closing and other costs associated with purchase of the property.
Administrator Dena Minneci said it would take about 90 days to complete the work and get a variance from the township’s Board of Zoning Appeals. A tentative closing date of June 2 has been set provided all the paperwork has been completed.
“We don’t have a timetable yet to build the fire station,” Minneci said.
The fire station would mirror the new Princeton Road station that opened Jan. 20. That 11,417 square foot station was built at a cost of about $2.4 million and replaced the original Fire Station 1 constructed in 1953.
Architectural drawings from the new station would be modified to fit the topography of the Kyles Station property, saving the township the cost of drawing up new plans, Minneci said.
