Massillon council asked to try again to sell Legends

April 15, 2008 MASSILLON The city's Parks and Recreation Board fired a barrage of requests at City Council on Monday in an effort to slow the bleeding caused by debt payments on The Legends of Massillon golf course.
The board asked council to: • Advertise for sale 52 acres of land at the course for a second time. This time, however, the board is asking that no minimum bid be placed on the land. Last month, no one bid on the property. • Take the golf course out of the department's budget and place it under the general fund. The board asked that council rescind a motion that gave control of the course to the department in 2002. • Allocate $350,000 from the general fund to the department to pay bills and the debt. Director Kenn Kaminski asked for the money as a short-term solution after the city failed to sell the land. Parks board member Jeff Thornberry told council the department is faced with problems, both short and long term. Councilman Tony Townsend, chairman of Parks and Recreation Committee, said he voted against advertising the land for sale when council first took up the issue, but has since changed his mind. "I thought long and hard and I couldn't come up with any other option," he said. "Selling the acres is the only thing we can do right now to get us out of this mess." Townsend said the other two requests by the board "won't fly." Councilman Ron Mang said he will bring the legislation forward for a vote next week. Read the complete article from CantonRep.com » |
