Land purchase to preserve White Rocks

Towering 3,500 feet above Cumberland Valley is a Pennsylvania gem known as White Rocks. The spectacular unbroken views of this quartzite rock outcropping were almost shattered by a large housing development. To ensure these views remain unobstructed and habitat undisturbed, The Appalachian Trail Conservancy recently acquired 840 acres of this forested landscape. March 13, 2011 "Had this development gone through, what you would be looking at would be over 260 homes," said Karen Lutz, mid-Atlantic regional director of the conservancy. "The noise, the forest fragmentation and the loss of wildlife habitat are why we were so interested in making sure that the deal was fully executed and worked so hard to secure funding."
