Advertisements seeking buyers for 51 acres of Port Royal waterfront are appearing on the pages of major newspapers across the Southeast and the country.
The S.C. State Ports Authority placed notices advertising the sale of the Port of Port Royal in The Post and Courier, The State, The Wall Street Journal, The Greenville News, The Charlotte Observer, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Charleston Regional Business Journal, according to spokesman Byron Miller.
The development of the property on the Battery Creek will be governed by a set of planned-unit development guidelines the Town Council adopted in November. A 2004 state law ordered the Ports Authority to close and sell the port by the end of last year.
Town Manager Van Willis told the Town Council this month that significant interest has kept town staff busy since the Ports Authority opened the property up for proposals Dec. 22. Parties from across the country have expressed interest, he said.
The zoning guidelines for the property, which covers more than 300 acres, including marshland, divide it into three parts: a residential area, a mixed-use marina district, and a downtown commercial center. Potential buyers can make proposals on any or all of the three sections, Willis said.
Tours are being offered to interested buyers, with the first one scheduled Jan. 31, Miller said.
Proposals are due to the Ports Authority by 5 p.m. March 30.
