Long before there were horses on this continent the pre-historic natives of what is now the western United States had an ingenious, if not entirely grizzly, way of hunting bison. They'd herd the beasts (again, without horses) toward an unsuspecting looking cliff and spook them into stampeding off the edge. Hence the modern terminology, “buffalo jump.” A 10,000-year-old buffalo jump was added to the cadre of wonders in Wind Cave National Park at a land dedication ceremony Saturday morning, as was a historic homestead established 21 years before the park itself. These are just two of the highlights within the 5,555 acres of new land added to the south-eastern corner of the park. The National Park Service has been gunning for this parcel since former owners, the Casey family of Bear Country U.S.A. fame, approached Wind Cave National Park officials about purchasing the property in 2000.
