Small acreage is big business

As the consumers become more interested in the orgins of their food, the demographic of farms providing them is changing. Small vineyards, orchards and livestock operations. "What is happening, just to give you a little bit of history, family farms are being divided up and sold because kids don't want to come back and work the farm," said Robert Grant, Morris County Extension agent. "So, they are breaking them up into 10- and 20-acre plots and selling them off, piece by piece, to make more money -- and the people that are buying them are realizing they can make some money with their small acreage."
