Residents dont like proposed sale of Salt Lake County land

The plan would sell 832 acres of Salt Lake County owned land in Rose Canyon to Kennecott. On the surface, it sounds like a good deal. Kennecott already has the mineral rights below the 832 acres and has begun exploratory drilling to see if it can mine the area.

In payment, the county would get $5,345,000 – a million more than it paid for the land – as well as assurances that access to the canyon would remain open. In a published Q&A it was stated, “Kennecott has agreed to keep the area open to the public for non-motorized recreational day-use; however they shall have the right to restrict public access for health and safety reasons.”
