Deal shields 640 acres in Chesapeake from development

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the sale of a conservation easement on land near the Northwest River to the Navy. The sale price was $1.55 million. Development is now prohibited on the 640 acres of land along Ballahack Road near the river, which the city purchased in June for $3.3 million. The move allows the city to preserve the Northwest River, Chesapeake's largest source of drinking water, said Karen Shaffer, the assistant planning director.
