Gov. Tim Kaine greeted land conservation enthusiasts at an event at Hollins University on August 14.
Kaine hopes to put 400,000 acres of Virginia property under a conservation easement during his four years as governor; already landowners have placed more than 100,000 acres under these protective easements during the the governor’s term.
Landowners Skip Brandemuehl and Lee Hartman, who live on top of Tinker Mountain, participated in an easement initiative last year that placed 235 acres on the southern slope of Tinker Mountain under a conservation easement.
Hollins University, through alumna donations, along with Hartman and Brandemuehl and the Western Virginia Water Authority, spent a combined $352,000 to purchase the property in order to keep development from the side of the mountain and to protect the Carvins Cove watershed.
Hartman said during his speech before a crowd of about 100 people that he was pleased they were able to stop the destruction of the mountain he hads lived on for 35 years.
