ELLENSBURG — The deadlines for property owners to apply to put their rural land into a current-use assessment status — under state Open Space or Designated Forest Land rules — are set for the end of this month, according to a news release from Kittitas County Assessor Marsha Weyand.
She said new, completed applications along with the application fee must be submitted to the Kittitas County Auditor’s Office, Room 101, by 5 p.m., Dec. 28, 2007, or mailed and postmarked no later than Dec. 31, 2007, in order to receive reduced assessments on the value of rural lands in 2008 for taxes payable in 2009.
The Auditor’s Office is in the Kittitas County Courthouse, 205 W. Fifth Ave. in Ellensburg.
If land that has been approved for open space or designated forest land is involved in an ownership transfer or sale, notice must be given to the Assessor’s Office in advance of the transaction, Weyand said.
A review of the property will be completed by the Assessor’s Office to determine if the land qualifies for continuance as open space or designated forest land. Request for Continuance forms are available on the Kittitas County Web site at: http://www.co.kittitas.wa.us/assessor.
In addition to review of the land upon sale, statutory authority is given to the Assessor’s Office to audit land uses for all property approved for open space or designated forest land assessment status. Land that no longer meets the statutory requirements must be removed from the special use program and removal tax will become payable, she said.
Application forms and information concerning the open space and designated forest land may be obtained at the Assessor’s Office in the County Courthouse. For more information, call 962-7501.
