Land For Sale To Raise Money For School
Source: WEAU.com, by Phil Dinges
November 06, 2007
A handful of Western Wisconsin school districts asked voters to approve more money for projects Tuesday through referendums but the Ladysmith-Hawkins district decided to do something a little different to raise some money this year.

Sometimes you are forced to think outside the box when previous attempts to raise money come up a little short. Though Ladysmith-Hawkins' idea may include a 40 acres box, getting rid of it can bring in some well needed cash. Ladysmith-Hawkins is home to the Lumberjacks, but to avoid chopping school programs, the district came up with a new angle. It’s selling some land.

"Now’s a good time especially right before deer season" says Jerry Gaddy.

Gaddy owns Gaddy's Shooting Supply in Ladysmith. He says hunting land is a hot commodity.

"Once in a while people come in and want to know if there's any hunting land for sale. It's getting to the point where you need your own land if you want to hunt" says Gaddy.

The school district put the 40 acre ad on its website and it’s already sold one 40 acre plot.

Gaddy says "to find decent land is getting pretty tough and when you do find it the price is fairly high."

The latest piece of land for sale runs along County Highway I in the Township of Grow. The district owns about 900 acres and got approval to sell two plots to raise some revenue and Gaddy thinks that will be fairly easy to do.

"I’ve seen 40's of swamp land going for $60,000 to $80,000. It's the kind of land that people would want to have" says Gaddy.

Superintendent Mario Friedel says the money generated by the sale will be used to cover general expenses. He says this 40 acre plot is not attached to the school forest and the district is asking $40,000 or best offer for the land. If you're interested, contact the Ladysmith-Hawkins district office.
