Land trust seeks to preserve

September 11, 2008 EAU CLAIRE — The West Wisconsin Land Trust has applied for a 50 percent matching grant from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program to assist with the purchase of about 316 acres in the town of Somerset in St. Croix County. The land trust will provide the matching funds.
The property includes about 1,300 feet of St. Croix River frontage. The property will be left in its natural state and will be open to the public for low-impact recreational activities including hunting, fishing, trapping, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and nature appreciation. The parcel is located within the Western Prairie Habitat Restoration Area and this proposed purchase is consistent with the land management strategies described in the 1998 Western Prairie Habitat Restoration Area feasibility study and environmental impact statement.
The state Department of Natural Resources has made a preliminary determination that the proposed acquisition will not involve significant adverse environmental impacts and that neither an environmental assessment nor environmental impact statement will be required.
Public comments on the proposal will be accepted through Thursday, Sept. 18. Interested individuals can send comments to Karen Blodgett, Community Services Specialist, P.O. Box 4001, Eau Claire, WI 54702-4001; call 715-836-6574; or send e-mail to karen.blodgett@wisconsin.gov.
