Buchanan said she is excited about working again in Waukesha County after leaving the district in 2004 for a job closer to her home.
She has remained active in Waukesha with volunteer work on the Waukesha Public Art Committee.
The committee promotes art for institutional buildings, such as the Waukesha transit center and the new downtown Fire Department.
The conservancy's mission is to identify areas critical to the rural character of the towns of Merton and Oconomowoc, Buchanan said.
The conservancy primarily seeks donations of land, easements and development rights. It also raises money to purchase and protect land.
Tall Pines works with landowners concerned about protecting their land, and it provides advice on protection strategies, she said.
Buchanan said she wants to make the public more aware of the conservancy and provide more educational assistance to those interested in learning preservation techniques.
"I'm getting the word out about what's being done and the tools that are available to conserve land," she said.
Buchanan said she was hired to take on the workload that had been carried by the conservancy's board of directors.
The conservancy has had at least one brush with politics. It opposed a proposed road near Highways 16 and 83 that was tied to the $15 million expansion of Lake Country Lutheran High School.
High school officials and the Village of Hartland pursued a legal battle against Tall Pines to the state appeals court. Tall Pines, formerly the Chenequa Land Conservancy, failed to block construction of the connector road.
The high school's association had agreed to build the road between Highways 83 and K in exchange for village approval of the school project.
Village officials said the road was necessary to reduce traffic congestion from students for both the Lutheran and Arrowhead high schools, which are nearby.
The road, known as Campus Drive, has yet to be built.
Tall Pines did not take its case to the Wisconsin Supreme Court but did purchase some of the affected property needed to build the road.
