Gillette will be another square mile larger soon, after the Gillette City Council agreed to begin the process to annex two large parcels of agricultural land to the city Monday night.
One 306-acre parcel, located just to the east of the Gillette Golf Club, belongs to the State of Wyoming. A 311-acre parcel adjacent and east of the state’s parcel belongs to George Ann Burch and Clinton Pickerel. The two parcels are immediately to the south of Boxelder Road.
Another 48 acres will be annexed as a right of way, bringing the total to 663.5 acres.
The city is 16.4 square miles without the proposed annexation.
Gillette City Planner Michael Surface said Monday that the Pickrel family intends to develop its parcel some time in the future. He was not sure what uses might be proposed for the state land, but he said the city’s master plan shows a mixture of medium and low residential, mixed use and civic uses for the general area.
An expansion of the golf course is a possible option, he said.
State law requires that the city can only annex land adjacent to its city limits, meaning the state land had to be annexed before the Pickrel land could be annexed. The land will remain agricultural until, or if, specific development plans are proposed and a zoning change is requested.
