After 40 years living away, my father retired and moved home again -- and he named his homeplace Hom-A-Gen. We told him no one would know how to correctly pronounce it. But now you know what he meant and why he named it this.
I inherited most of the land and, in 1995, bought 13 surrounding properties that totaled 500 acres, creating a contiguous property with outside borders that were 90% covered in mature forests. These forests hid nearly all of the surrounding land from view. I wanted total privacy. I did not want to see cutovers, neighboring homes and farm buildings, or people. I had always believed that God made much more beautiful places than man. Some of the land inside the borders had once been fields that had been long ago abandoned and allowed to grow up in Virginia Pines. I cleared about 250 acres of abandoned fields and planted them in Fescue and Orchard Grass. I wanted a large protected property that was mature hardwoods and beautiful grass fields.
We built two and a half miles of really good gravel roads and bridges over a major stream and a beautiful pond to control flooding. We also tore down abandoned buildings. Environmentalists examined the entire property and found no dumping grounds, abandoned graves, or contamination.
For twenty years, we have harvested tons of hay for horse owners and cattle farmers. The property is teaming with deer, turkeys, rabbits, a few foxes and an occasional coyote. Whether local resident or out-of-towner, everyone who comes thinks the place is really beautifulthe prettiest place in the county!
It has been a true privilege to have owned it and loved this land for 20+ years. But at nearly 80 years old, it is time to downsize to my original land and turn it over to younger stewards for them to enjoy. I think one could visit 100 farms in Piedmont N.C. and southern Virginia and you wont find a more beautiful country place! While I would be thrilled if one family purchased the entire property, I have made four sections of the land so buyers can own some of it and not have to buy it all. All four of the sections are wonderful properties! (Section 5 is sold.)
